Epoxy Powder Coating
Functional and tough coatings
Epoxy powder coating is still widely used today, especially as a functional and tough coating where flexibility, adhesion, toughness and corrosion resistance are needed.
Epoxy coatings are based on epoxy resin, they are manufactured in a way which enables the possibility of coating to a high thickness without defect in the coating after curing.
Epoxy powder coatings get a good adhesion to aluminium surfaces, and provide a good corrosion protection layer (for indoor use). Most outstanding with this powder finish is the excellent resistance against solvents and other chemicals.
Epoxy powder coatings are especially suitable in aggressive environments. However they are not suitable for external use where they become discoloured as the pigments are broken down by the UV rays in sunlight, consequently they can become chalky and actually decrease in thickness as they are washed away.
Common uses involve the coating of valves, pipe work and rebar. 60-100 microns thickness is typical
The low gloss and matte coatings can also be applied to shelving and metal furniture as well as electrical components from refrigerator parts to high voltage switchgear.
The smooth coating also has good abrasion resistance with superior electrical properties making expoxy powder coating a perfect covering for many electrical products such as flourescent light housings.
Case Study
A major manufacturer of lights and fittings for domestic kitchens and office systems asked Batchglow to source a painting method that would offer a hardwearing coating which would also be aesthetically pleasing and would add value to their product. As a result Batchglow, working closely with their designers, sourced and applied an epoxy coating that fully fitted their specification.
